Apparently a new breed of trophy wives has risen through the ranks. When I think of a trophy wife, I think, blond, w.a.s.p-y, smoking hot, in Lilly Pulitzer and pearl clad. However, in a recent Marie Claire article, it seems that Asian women are becoming the new trophy wives—they call it the “Woody Allen Effect.” I personally think it all started with John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
I had always assumed that white men dating Asian women was a fleeting urban trend, possibly fetishism, but maybe now it is becoming more. Asian women have moved beyond just being viewed as an exotic commodity but as trophy wife material. Here are just some of the couples that fit the bill: Rupert Murdoch and Wendi Deng, CBS head Leslie Moonves and TV news anchor Julie Chen, and Nicolas Cage and his waitress wife Alice Kim.
The combination can be observed prevalently, especially in New York City. I can personally attest to the pairing especially when my gay roommate and I walk around Brooklyn. Everyone assumes we are the quintessential hipster couple because he is a bearded Jewish guy and I am the prototypical Asian girl.Go figure.
But my favorite thing about all of this is that Asian girls are # 11 on stuffwhitepeoplelike.com. And why shouldn’t we be, SWPL highlights that “Asian women avoid key white women characteristics, such as having a midlife crisis, divorce, and hobbies that don’t involve taking care of the children.” I don’t think this is a factual representation of Asian women, but if it means I can score myself a rich billionaire, I’m all for it.
